The Boombotix REX is a unique entry level Boombotix Boombot REX Wireless Ultraportable Weatherproof Bluetooth Speaker that claims to be revolutionary with features such as industrial design, noise cancelling mic, siri integration, built in clip and many other features stuffed into this ultra portable device that you can clip on to you and take with you where ever you go. Lets find out if this little speaker lives up to the hype.
Design and Features
The Boombotix Rex comes in many different color variations and different skins as well. The hexagonal design added with the thick ABS plastic feels rather nice in the palm of your hand. Dimensions on the Boombotix Rex are 3 x 3 x 2 inches and the whole thing only weighs 8 ounces. The design is minimalist and so are the controls. In the back above the clip is where you will find you main controls such as the volume, pairing and play and pause controls. The play/ pause button functions by answering calls on the Rex in addition to playing and pausing your music. In the back below the clip you will also find a micro USB, 3.5mm input and 3.5mm output aux port and you do get an included winding cable for the input and output aux.
The Rex runs on a built in battery which will last you about 6 hours and takes a quick 1 hour to fully charge. The battery life isĀ good for its size but not great. Behind the grill you will find two 36mm 3 watt drivers side by side and also an LED light that changes colors depending on charge status and pairing status. The Boombotix Rex pairs with any smart Bluetooth device and claims to have a 33ft connection before cutting out. The Rex is pretty well fortified designed water resistant and able to withstand some outdoor abuse.
We found it very convenient that the Rex allows you to clip itself onto just about anything. Enjoying a bike ride and clipping it on to your backpack or placing it somewhere on your bike makes it very easy to listen to tunes and you wont have to bother with those annoying earphones that fall out or get caught on your jacket especially if you are a fast road biker. Additionally there is a special bracket you can purchase from Boombotix or Amazon to mount on your bicycle which can be found here. The speaker is loud enough even when biking to listen to music and answer a call.
Sound Quality
Powered by dual 36mm drivers and a passive bass, the Boombotix Rex provides decent audio quality in our opinion. We think the audio is pretty linear with not a lot of emphasis on bass, midrange and clarity. When you push the speaker to max volume on certain songs it does tend to distort. The speaker does project loudly enough and you will definitely be able to hear people when you are on speaker phone.
We believe that if you are an audiophile then perhaps you should skip on the Boombotix Rex because you will just not be satisfied by the sound this speaker projects. For the rest of you folks looking for a very portable speaker to take with you on your fast paced adventures, we think the Rex can please you with what it offers.
If you are looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker that is both more rugged and surpasses the Boombotix Rex in audio performance ( by quite a bit ) then have a look at the Braven BRV-1.
