By: Mike King - Update: September 29, 2022

If you have used Windows 10, you probably have noticed that it has issues with sound. In most cases, Windows 10 does not detect headphones. In other cases, the headphones are detected, but no sound is produced. This may not be a serious issue, but it can frustrate you when listening to music or watching a movie on your PC.

But what could the issue be? There may be technical, connection, or settings problems. And surprisingly, you can fix the issue easily and fast on your own. Here are quick fixes you can try to get your headphones to work on Windows 10.

Check the Headphones

You may think that you have a serious problem when no sound comes out of your headphones. But that may not actually be the case. Probably, the volume of your headphones level is zero. You should increase the volume on the headphones, and you will start hearing the sound. If this doesn’t work, consider other solutions explained here.

Plug in the Headphone and Restart Your PC

This simple, quick fix has helped many people experiencing no sound, or their headphones are not detected by the PC. It is as easy as it sounds. Plug the headphones in your laptop or computer. Then restart your device. Check if the headphones work. If they don’t, try the next fixes.

Enable Your Playback Device

Check if the headphone as a playback device is disabled by the OS. If it is disabled, enable it. Start by connecting the headphones to the computer. Then right-click the speaker icon on your PC taskbar and click ‘Sounds’. If the headphones are not listed in the Playback tab, right-click the blank area and select ‘Show Disabled Devices’. The headphones should show up; right-click them and select ‘Enabled’. To save the changes, click ‘OK’.

Once done with the procedure, check if the headphones are now working or not. If they are not working, try the next quick fix.

Set the Headphones as Default Device

Probably, the headphones are not functioning properly because you have not set them as the default device on your computer. You can solve this problem by pressing the Windows logo key and ‘X’ at the same time. Then select ‘Control Panel’, go to ‘View by’, and choose ‘Category’.

After that, click ‘Hardware and Sound’. Click ‘Sound’ and on the ‘Playback’ tab, choose headphones. Click ‘Set Default’, then ‘OK’, and your headphones will be ready to function.

Still no positive results? Don’t get tired; let’s try the following fix.

Update Your Audio/Sound Driver

The headphones may not work if there is an issue with the audio driver. A quick solution to this is updating the audio driver. You can update it manually, but the process is long and complicated. Instead, consider using a driver updater tool. Choose an advanced tool that can help you manage all the driver updates.

Disable Sound Enhancements

Please note that some sound cards don’t function if any of the sound enhancements are enabled. You can fix the problem by disabling all the enhancements. Go to ‘Sounds’, click ‘Enhancements’ tab and select ‘Disable All Enhancements’. If that was the issue, the headphones should work.

Final Words

It can be frustrating trying to listen to music on your PC using your headphones but can’t get any sound. The above fixes can help resolve the problem. But if you can handle the fixes on your own, you can let an expert guide you in fixing the problem. However, if the solutions don’t work, you should consider seeking help from a computer guru or headphone repair expert.
