By: Mike King - Update: July 29, 2022

As a DJ, you could be struggling to find headphones that will make your work easier and perfect. Professional headphones for DJs should effectively monitor tunes during a performance. Unfortunately, most of the headphones in the market today come with poor sonic balance or too much bass. This makes them unfit for deejaying. But let us see whether the Sony MDR V55 headphones worthy the “DJ headphone” title.

There are several factors that we have discussed in this review article. We have tested these headphones thoroughly to bring you an in-depth Sony MDR V55 review! Read on to find out more about these headphones.

Comfort and Design

Many headphone users recognize them by their looks and not performance. The MDR V55 headphones are not an exceptional case. These headphones have an aesthetic look that is pleasing to the eyes. They are available in various matte colors. Such colors will automatically make something attractive. Matte black and matte white are the two colors that are available for these headphones. They also have optional red and blue color trims.

Among the most critical aspects of any wired headphones is the cable. There are a few questions about a headphones’ cable that you need to ask yourself before purchasing them.

  1. Is the cable detachable or fixed?
  2. Does the cable tange unnecessarily?

What is its length?

The MDR V55 has a unique flat-wired cable. This type of cable is advantageous because it ensures that your cable is tangle-free, and the wire is also resistant to wear and tear. Flat cables are durable than cylindrical cables.

One of the shortcomings of these headphones’ cable is that it’s fixed. It’s also unnecessarily lengthy, with a total length of 1.2 m. The wires end in angled 3.5 mm thick audio jacks. This type of jack gets frowned in headphones because many people use headphones with smartphones. Angled jacks are likely to get stuck in bags or pockets; hence many headphone users don’t prefer them. These cables are also thin and not as durable as someone may desire for their headphones.

Looking at their headband, you may be slightly disappointed. The rubber-coated headbands are non-plastic and have very little material at the top. Your head will be comfortable whenever you are using them. Thanks to the rubber coating. Amazingly, the inner side of the headband has less padding than the outer side. More padding would mean more comfort than they are with thin padding. Although these headphones are considerably comfortable to wear, they may feel uncomfortable in hot or humid weather.

Bearing in mind that Sony MDR V55 are DJ headphones, they have supports for ear cups to allow for free rotation. The support arms ensure that the headphone cups can be folded freely to whichever direction. This factor makes these headphones easier to carry around or pack in your bag.  These plastic arms are big, which some people like while others dislike. Regretfully, the arms are a little bit noisy than one may expect. They make a creaking sound that may turn to be devastating after a while.

Durability and Product Quality

Whenever we talk of Sony, don’t expect to get a low-quality product. Talking of Sony MDR V55 headphones, you are simply talking “high-quality” headphones. These headphones are excellent, although it could be better if some improvements were made on this product. The overall comfort of these headphones should be increased to make it more classic. Most of the headphones’ parts are metallic with some negligible rubber and plastic. We feel that improving the plastic leather earcups to make them more comfortable for the ears can be great. Also, increasing the size of earcups would genuinely make the Sony MDR V55 the best over-the-head earphones for DJs.

Because these headphones are highly foldable, they are easy to carry. Sadly, they don’t come with a carry case, which is a non-negotiable letdown for buyers.

At their price, we feel that the 40 mm neodymium sound drivers make it worth the bucks. After all, who doesn’t want to get high-quality things at affordable prices?

Performance and Sound Quality

We can’t say that the Sony MDR V55 headphones’ sound quality and performance are poor although they may not be the best. Their 40 mm neodymium powerful sound drivers give a brilliant sound output for these budget-friendly headphones. When we compare them to the MDR V6 and MDR V7506 headphones, they are far from being referred to as perfect.

Bass

Most budget-friendly don’t give a clear and uncanny bass. However, DJ headphones should have excellent bass output. This is the case for the Sony MDR V55. Though they are low-priced, they give a surprisingly clear output. This allows the user to enjoy clear sounds crisply.

Mids

The MDR V55 gives a unique, elegant fashion of the mid-range frequency. This makes it a good option since you won’t feel thumps or kicks as the case for some headphones.

Treble

Like the mid-range sounds, the MDR V55 gives crisp and sharp high-pitched sounds to compliment the thumping low-pitched bass sounds.

Sony MDR V55’s Frequently Asked Questions

Do the MDR V55 headphones have Bluetooth?

Unfortunately, these headphones don’t have any wireless connectivity. Their cable is not detachable. In most cases, Bluetooth headphones are more expensive.

How is the noise-cancellation and leakage in Sony MDR V55?

These headphones lack an in-built noise cancellation feature, and their earcups are not large enough for effective noise canceling. The MDR V55 headphones can block some noise but can’t block it completely. They also leak up to 20 dB, which makes it necessary to listen to considerably low volume.

Does the Sony MDR V55 have other applications than Deejaying?

No headphones are manufactured and given the mandate to be used for a specific purpose. The Sony MDR V55 can be used to listen to music as well as for gaming.

Final Thoughts

There are two questions to ask yourself before you decide to invest in any type of headphones. Do they sound good? And are they comfortable? The MDR-V55 do just fine when we consider the sound clarity. Unfortunately, they are less comfortable compared to most Deejaying headphones. We feel that Sony MDR V55 are great low budget headphones.
